The History

Originally known as Baker Prairie, the area was a traditional gathering place for local Indigenous tribes who harvested wild strawberries across its expansive grasslands. European settlers began arriving in the mid-19th century via the Oregon Trail. The town site was officially platted in 1870 by Philander Lee, who named it in honor of Civil War Major General Edward Canby. Incorporated in 1893 as the second-oldest city in Clackamas County, Canby quickly grew into a crucial agricultural and rail hub. Its rich soil enabled booming flower bulb, nursery, and farming industries, earning Canby its nickname, the "Garden Spot of Oregon."
